Good Wood Biofuel wood pellets are made from compressed sawdust from wood milling and the manufacture of furniture and other wood products. During the manufacturing process, the pellets are heated to a high temperature which removes moisture and kills off any germs.
This makes biofuel wood pellets hygienic and VERY absorbent. They will absorb up to three times their own weight in water. Simply sprinkling water onto wood pellets effectively creates soft fluffy sawdust that is good insulation and has the added benefit of being virtually hypoallergenic. This means less chance of respiratory problems, for you and your horses. It keeps hooves dry and it doesn't get tangled up in manes the way that straw does, so makes for easier grooming. Unlike straw, Horses will not try and eat it. It is pleasantly pine-scented.
From a storage point of view, the compressed pellets take up far less room than other bedding types like straw. Wood pellets make mucking out easier - it is easy to see damp patches in the bedding and these can be easily removed, so the bedding lasts longer. Also, the horse will not eat the bedding as they do with straw. It is even possible to recycle the used bedding as fuel after it has dried out.
